History of the Kamen

Kamen, now part of Split, was first mentioned in 1144 and gained strategic importance during the 16th century due to Ottoman raids. Originally near a cliff, it served as a defensive point with a small watch stationed to protect local villagers and farmland. Its natural position made it ideal for fortification, and Venetian officials saw it as key to securing the eastern edge of Split’s territory. Over time, Kamen has developed into a peaceful residential neighborhood combining rural charm and proximity to Split’s urban center.

Several interesting locations can be found near Kamen:

Stobreč: A coastal town with a rich history, known for archaeological sites from the Roman era, including the remains of the ancient settlement of Epetion. Once a Greek colony, Stobreč later became part of the Roman Empire. Today, it offers a charming mix of historical landmarks, beaches, and a lively waterfront with cafés and restaurants.

Žrnovnica: A picturesque village known for the Žrnovnica River and its traditional water mills. Nestled at the foot of Mount Mosor, it’s a favorite spot for nature lovers and hikers. Source of the Žrnovnica River
Located near the village of Žrnovnica, about 3 km from Kamen, the source of this short but picturesque river is ideal for peaceful walks and enjoying nature.

Mountain Mosor
Rising above Kamen, this mountain massif offers numerous hiking trails with breathtaking views of the Split Riviera and nearby islands. Its highest peak, Veliki Kabal, reaches 1,339 meters above sea level.  If you decide to hike, bringing full hiking gear and supplies of water and food is recommended.

Cetina River
Famous for canyoning and rafting, the Cetina River flows through Omiš, around 20 km from Kamen. The dramatic canyon landscape makes it perfect for outdoor adventures and spectacular views.

Vranjača Cave

Located near Dugopolje, about 24 km from Kamen, this cave is a protected geomorphological natural monument known for its impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

Stobreč
Besides its family-friendly beach, Stobreč offers a 6-hole golf course ideal for beginners and recreational players. The relaxed atmosphere, affordable daily passes, and on-site equipment rental make it easily accessible—no dress code or reservation is needed.
